Yeah although on the other hand doing 20 miles a day everyday I might be able to justify buying something nice , if I take my cbt now then turn 17 can I hop straight onto a 125?

Do it.
If I was buying a learner bike it would be one of those. It will be light, nippy and with decent tyres you'll be able to think it round corners.
It might even go well too. I thoroughly enjoyed my CBR125, and these Yamahas are way better.Just don't waste money trying to tune it. Ride it, enjoy it for what it is and if you want to go faster pass your test.

Am always wary of 125 as I don't like them as such. The joy of having ridden a yamaha SR125 and Honda cg125. The bikes don't feel planted and blown about by the slightest gust. But have enjoyed a the rs125 but then that is a 33bhp enging and did enjoy the ex's suzuki van van. Sad thing I enjoyed unrestricted vespa's but that was a different time.
If you buy it second hand you should be able to sell it for the same value, or buy in the cold and sell in the warm,

GSXR6 vresus zxr400 - this is my opinion therefore am right, an it is gospel or godspell.
Of the two bikes the 4 is the better speced bike for suspension and brakes, both bikes IMO need suspension tweaking to fit the weight of the rider in full kit. The gixxer is a bit of a budget bike, parts wise. Think that the watercooled bikes shocks aren't rebuildable. All the 4 I've had were. Is the 6 much quicker that the 4? The 4 of that ear are really compact and have such mass centralisation that the handling is really good even with worn shocks. The mass centralisation thing was learn later if you look at a zx10 size compared to 4, the size is similar. Also I chose the Nissin brakes over tokico every day. I am a fan of suzukis, and a bit brand biased but the gsxr did have a certain buyer image that I thing that they will never shake. The 600 was the cheapy.
If I were going to make the jump, I'd go for the 750, higher VED bracket but similar wieght bike
If I was going to go for a bike that handled better than a 4 I would go for an early 600rr as the were the best handling bikes of the time.

Thoughts on scooter choice...
Really not interested in the debate between a "real" bike and a scooter. It will be used once or twice a week, max, to get to work when I have client meetings. It must carry smart things and not cost very much.

Thanks very much for the honest thoughts.
My intention to move up the cc ladder is as I've mentioned before, to sell the ZXR 400 get a more modern and powerful bike with it hopefully not costing me much. My bike is an '89 and swapping it for a '99 model is very temping. It's interesting you say about the 750, but there is a part of me that likes the idea of moving up the cc ladder slowly mastering each platform first. I'm a Honda guy everyday of the week, but a good CBR 600 RR would cost me £3000(?) and that's out of my budget.
For reference
1989 ZXR 400 H1: 61HP / 163kg (dry)
1999 GSXR 600: 92HP / 174kg (dry)Thanks again for all the opinions, really useful.

Just kidding, they are immensely practical. Can't go wrong with any Honda or Yamaha build quality-wise imo, any of the peds I have ridden have felt so similar, the only noticable difference was body aesthetics and slightly different buttons. Only other thing, I would choose 4 stroke over a 2 stroke

There's your problem right there. The CG is slow as guts, with crap brakes and antique suspension. And the SR is a fucking tractor.
A nice light nippy sports 125 is like night and day compared with those heaps.

My thought is look at the SH125. Big wheels, absolute practicality, and very low running costs. They are going for £25 per week with a suitable deposit.

Honda and other commuter scooters will never break down but they will only ever be white goods. If your fine with that then go for it, but if you want a bit of style and fun, buy a Vespa.

Water cooled, much better acceleration because they are limited to meet the bhp regs, not struggling to manage, 6 or 7 gears, hydraulic discs front and rear, decent suspension, full instrumentation inc fuel gauge, good aerodynamics, decent sized wheels and tyres. My CBR did an indicated 84 down hill on the M20, all tucked in :-) bloody great little learner machine, and a piece of piss to pass my test on.
Just had my first shift at work and looks like I'll be joining you guys in the motorcycle thread soon , Got myself set on the Yamaha yzfr125 \/ despite the (probably sensible) arguement of saving the money till I can get a big bike
