Which bike related charity can I partner with?

Posted on
  • Hi all

Since my brother passed away in 2008, my family and I have fundraised for a memorial fund set up in his name.

We have, to date, raised nearly £100,000 and some of this has been given away to charities and organisations affiliated with him.

We are now looking for a longer term charity, NGO or organisation to partner with and would love for it to be bike related. He was a keen cyclist and this would be a great way for his memory to be carried on.

There has even been thought of setting up an organisation in India that allows people to buy bikes through an interest free loan, therefore mobilising some of poorest of the population. However, there is not currently the capacity to do this, hence us wanting to find a partner.

Any ideas whatsoever would be much appreciated. If you know of something that isn't bike related, please also mention it. Just to give some food for thought, here are some of the things he was known for: cycling, rugby, sport, India (we are Indian), youth groups (he was 16)

    Thanks!

  • Anybody know anything about this: http://www.re-cycle.org/

  • Yes, it's a good organisation. LCC in Hackney have often donated to it (from fundraiser proceeds). Re~Cycle have so far concentrated on Africa, so getting into India may be a bit of a phase shift for them.

Do you want to specifically partner with a charity that gets people in India on bikes or are you looking at a wider range of possible cycling projects?

Disclaimer: I'm an LCC trustee but not fishing for whether you'd consider LCC, it just wasn't quite clear from your post.

  • A friend of mine has done a lot of work with Re-Cycle and I've visited their premises which are in my home town. Good people with their hearts in the right place and doing big things.

I can put you in contact with the guy who is connected if that would be any help.

  • Thanks for the replies so far. I have also had a couple of PMs that I will respond to - much appreciated.

Oliver: Not specifically. We are looking at a wide range of projects, they don't even have to be cycling related. However, if it was a bike related charity that was also associated with India, this would be amazing!

Good to hear that you have had a positive experience with re-cycle. LCC looks to be doing great work!

Croft: To echo my sentiments above, good to hear about your personal and positive experience. I will talk to my family and see if this is something worth discussing with the.

Question: I can make some educated guesses, but what would donations predominantly be used for at Re-Cycle? Oliver, you may be able to answer this.

  • I have no idea where Re~Cycle's current priorities may lie. Merlin, who runs Re~Cycle, is very approachable and I'd just get in touch with him and discuss it if you're interested in funding them. Or do you have an application process for funds in which applicants can tell you how they want to use it?

Thanks for the praise! We do try our best. :)
