I had the opposite. I convinced my wife that I saved over a grand when building my titanium bike, because the frame was on sale, all the parts were NOS off eBay for chips or from sales. It bit me back when I had a £2.5k tax bill and she told me to sell it ("you'll make a huge profit"), instead of using our savings.
