you take two photos, one of the bike in the shot (being held by hand) and another photo of just the background. You then overlay them in Ps and erase the arm and hand leaving the background photo to show through. tricky to explain :)

You've over-complicated it...
2 photos of the bike, one holding it on one end, the other t'other... Cut them together as appropriate.

Done the way TM described - it keeps the light more accurate. If I was to take the whole bike out the picture i don't have a focal reference point so the background would look different.
You could always ghosty the bike then run and catch it!

... or prop it up with something then photoshop it out.
I like your method though, sorry if this is getting a bit silly, but what camera / lens? Really like how the background looks.

Nikon D3X with a Nikkor 50MM 1.4 prime lens - it's having the1.4 aperture that gives you the short focal length and blurry background
This is way off topic but how on earth did you get the bike to stand on that photo. Can't see anything keeping its balance.
