And I have to agree with dammit. 12 months use out of a BB that would usually cost less than £20, unless you're a flash git and feel the need for hope/Chris King is great bang for buck.

  • There are some external BB crankset that look decent but not worth it in the long term if the BB need replacing every years rather than decade.

I put 105 BB on JB's bike base on it's claimed to have better sealant and bearing.

  • A shimano one fitted properly on a well faced frame by a trained mechanic at a good LBS.

    Know any?

    ;-)

I'm wearing a Mavic apron, does that count?

  • Sure, why not.

  • Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't a regular external BB last longer in theory than an internal one as it's using larger bearings?

  • I have never, ever bought a BB based on the criteria "must last a decade".

Ed- what is the longest you have owned any of your bikes for?

  • Hah, nicely done.

Supposedly the old Retrovelo before I sold it, BB is still spinning smoothly for 3 years, and it have been through some abuse.

  • Or SKF, but a decent Shimano does last for quite some time.

  • Or SKF, but a decent Shimano does last for quite some time.

oops. wanted to delete and replace with a different comment, you're too fast.

I could always use my standard GXP on the Dodici and use my CK GXP on this.

  • Sound like a good idea once you get a sensible chainset.

  • It's back on now...

Received the chainset, not only is it not compact but it's BB30. Back to eBay it goes >>>>>

Cheap 2nd hand Thomson stem/seatpost arrived whilst I was away. Anyone have a black seatpost clamp? I think it's 29.8mm

Also seller of my black CK headset ended up refunding me for the purchase of a new crown race as the one he included was not original and provided a poor fit (as you can see below).

Should be ordering some other parts soon, just looking for the bargains/sale items primarily.

I take it the SKS Longboards I need are the 45mm width for 37c tyres? Otherwise I should probably take JB's 35mm ones.

Apologies for the rack stays, I know they're on upside down ;)

  • 45mm might be a tight fit with 37mm tyres.

Go for at least 50mm, especially since the LHT can take up to 45mm without mudguard.

  • Edit - Longboard don't go more than 45mm, other recommendation is the Bluemels Trekking (53mm).

This way you can max out the clearance of the Surly (like adding CX tyres).

  • Yep, partly because it have a reasonable long enough flap without spending more money.

  • SRAM Rival compact chainset is down to £107 at Wiggle... hmm....

now works out as £93.49 with discount - cheaper than trade.

  • Have you looked if theres any cheap sram s900/950 series cranks?

They're pretty smart too and around that price

  • really? I can only see them at twice that price!

  • Why SRAM? just get cheap Tiagra crankset instead, they're £50 on Wiggle and come in 175mm if you believe in the hype.

  • yeah but they look like a blind gorilla intern on DMT was in charge of designing them

  • So does your rack.

  • Also, I've had nothing but positive experiences with GXP and Omniums, pretty sure the same will apply with Rival. Hopefully the Force cranks will pay for the price difference anyway.

  • So does your rack.

    Soz that made me lol

    IGMC bye

  • Those tortec stays can be a real pain to get set up. So many weird angles :-/

Might I suggest these Tubus ones instead? They look a lot neater.

  • Rack porn >>>>>

    Slacken off bolt..... move..... .....tighten.

    Done.
