I'm using clips and straps on my commuter at the moment and they're shit. If I pull up to skid my shoe just comes away from the pedal and slips out, or if it does stay in place the sole just bends and the pedal keeps rotating.
try swerving and locking up earlier so your back foot can apply more pressure than pulling up in the front... have noticed the more level pedals are when braking the better
been riding low psi tires with tread as of late on straps/toe cages when hopping is required to break traction
