Patina or respray?

  • Hope i'm in the right area...

My 84 Holdsworth project is taking allot longer than expected to complete due to the sourcing of some small, irritating (and not so cheap) little bits.

As it's been sitting at the end of my bed for a couple weeks now i've been deliberating what to do about the condition of the frame and thought i'd ask what people opinions are on such things.

As far as i can tell the frame is 100% straight with no cracks but there is a small dent and the condition of the paint in some areas isn't great. It was pretty much in that condition when i got hold of it (dent sneakily concealed behind FD clamp). It's been off the road for 6 months now but prior to that it was used most days for about 5 years and the condition has never really deteriorated.

I guess what i'm asking is do people think this is a frame worth restoring? Is the condition at a point which puts it in the 'beater' bracket or for some is their a certain 'charm' with looking its age?

FYI, I have access to a compressor and can spray cellulose.

There's a good chance i'll be selling the bike but this question isn't about how much value can i add it's that i'd like to build this thing to the best of my ability

    cheers!

  • I see no reason to respray, you would be an idiot to respray.

    Ditto.

  • I'd say you add little or no value repainting this. On some very
collectible frames, I think you may well depreciate it.

    Patty Nah

  • Cheers guys,

To be fair even if i leave it patina i'd still be an idiot...

It's good to know people favour originality, i'm allot more involved with classic/old school cars and originality always wins. I'm less experienced with bikes and keep seeing nice looking classics getting armourtexed etc and keep wandering why!

  • Repaints are popular, but modern wet paint seems to be shit, and powder is just not simpatico with decent vintage frames.

I doubt anyone would berate you for repainting a pretty standard-looking holdsworth, but I'd leave it, maybe touch up if you have any larger patches of missing paint.

  • spent the money you would have on paint on a decent part (s)
wiser way to use your hard earned
