Donohue 853 Winter Rat

  • Bought this as a frameset a few years back at a jumble. Wasn't really interested when the seller pulled it out the boot, but he was quite insistant I buy it, given that it was my size. His son had bought it and for some reason decided to spray grey primer over the original paint. That was as far as he got with the project. His Dad wanted £40 for frame and forks with Veloce headset. I didn't barter. I did however sell the headset later for £20. So the f/f stands me at 20 quid. Turns out it's a Donohue 853 (possibly Millenium). Very light. Shaped seatstays and very beefy chainstays, ss rear dropouts, mudguard eyes, clearance for 25mm tyres with short reach calipers. It's one of the best frames I've ever ridden.
Built it up with a mix of 10 speed Chorus and Record. I've been touching the paint up as it's been wearing through. A beautiful blend of yellow and orange over the dull grey primer. It's got me through a few winters but now I think it deserves a bit of love. Plan is to strip it and repaint, clean all the parts and maybe upgrade a few.
Anyway, enough words. Here's a wank photo.

  • Good buy. 853 Donohue's seem to be a forum fav these days.

  • Paint the frame crimson and get it treated - jobs a good 'un

  • Getting there.

Colour/finish wise I'm hoping it's going to turn out somethinhg like this-

  • Is that rattlecan or wet paint?

  • 2k clear coat is on. Hopefully building it back up tomorrow.

  • Very nice colour. Ik hope it will last.

  • nice, but the Pegoretti style it had before was cool too.

  • Miserable day for a ride or photos, but it's finished.
