That bar got a bit of a long reach, you can get 70mm reach bar, like the Bontrager Race VR-S.
-
• #28
That's about as short as they come, no? For comparison the Ergonova is 77, Vero et al 80 and Ergosum 90mm.
-
• #29
I've got the Ergosum on my SystemSix, nice bar in my view.
I've got the Ergonova on the crosser, can't say that I can tell much of a difference in terms of reach.

^^ You may be right, 70mm is probably as short as one can go on compact drop.
Salsa Cowbell is 76mm, Soma HY1 is 75mm, Ritchey Classic Curve is 73mm for more choices.

ritchey curve was 73mm reach

Also I really need some help with chainring/sprocket/chain. Would like to use KMC TiNi chain if possible, as they are superb for corrosion resistance. I think the chainset is 130 bcd (will confirm as could be 110 if compact)

Get Wipperman 1z1, last just as long but for a lots less, actually is quite resistant to corrosion.
-
• #34
130bcd. hmm
-
• #35
I run a 39t 130bcd Thorn single ring on my Red cranks.
Cool story bro etc

Tbh, would probably go for pc1 nickel if it was single speed, but I also need to get a sprocket to fit the pro2 which is a regular cassette fit. I could use this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gusset-Single-Speed-Cassette-Sprocket-Cog-Cro-mo-Steel-3-32-Shimano-Fit-/400591831868
combined with this: http://www.probikeshop.com/kmc-k810sl-ti-n-chain-1-2-x-3-32-gold/63421.html
and perhaps this: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-130mm-bcd-5-arm-reversible-3-32-inch-single-chainring-black-prod11055/
as they are all 3/32"..... -

Fair enough, but I gotta says there's very little point in spending a lots of money on those KMC when a cheaper chain work just as well.
-
• #38
I appreciate that, I will do further research but I would prefer a nickel coated sram or KMC. Just personal pref. i suppose

Also, is it possible to run a single ring on the back of the RED cranks and a bash on the front?
I'm running a Hope SS rear hub with a Shiano 6600 chainset on my Pompetamine. Running the chainring on the outside gives me a 45mm chainline. Don't know how that compares with the SRAM Red. To get perfect chainline I've had to fit the sprocket right on the inside of the cassette. It's a wide foot sprocket mind.
Also worth noting the dropout/disc mount on the Pompetamine is a bit of a design fail. You should be okay with a 160mm rotor but if you want to run the wheel right back in the drops, you migh have to go up to a 180mm, as the seatstay can get in the way of the caliper.

Ha, yeh I've been wondering about that! So in theory i could run the ring at the back, a thorne bash or something on the front meaning i could potentially position the sprocket further in on the free hub body...
-
• #41
It'll depend on your exact chain line. Like I said, my sprocket is already as far inboard as it can go but I am using a Gusset Double Six sprocket which is wider at the bottom so you could probably get away with it using the sprocket you've found on ebay.

Great read.

Also just noticed you're looking at buying a Chris King headset and standard Pompetamine forks!?! Think you'd find a carbon fork and a basic Cane Creek headset would give you much better performance for similar money.
-
• #44
will be buying a Tange prestige disc cross fork - 1 1/18" straight. And will most likely use hope h/set.
Also, pompetamine forks are like £50 - where do you get carbon disc forks for that?
-
• #46
Ceeway sells these for £220* and they come in non-tapered steerer too: http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FOCOMDMON/columbus-mud-cx-disk-monocoque-carbon-fork
*Checked with them last year; could be cheaper now

• #47
Carbon cross forks here for £60!!
-
• #48
^ boom there you go!
-
• #49
Cheers chaps. Not sure If there's enough steerer left though.

YMMV but I think it makes more sense to use cheap components and replace them more frequently, than use expensive ones and have to replace them at about the same rate.
Cross eats components, so use what you can afford to replace.
Nice, considering the Hylex hoods are marginally longer than normal I guess a shorter bar would make more sense - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa-omega-compact-road-bar/rp-prod50187?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Shopping&utm_name=UnitedKingdom&gclid=CKvZzMm3uLwCFUj4wgod0VcAJQ look ok! and better value
