  • No, front fork spacing varies as well. Some old English frames have 93mm (or something like that) spacing at the front.

I think having the locknuts in direct contact with the cone shouldn't make any difference, but it sounds like you either need to get some nuts that fit the axle or a new axle.

  • or cut the axle down a wee bit?

  • quick bump because I might look into trying to find a solution today. Is there any reason why filing down the front axle would be a bad idea? I mean it sounds like a shame because they are nice wheels but I'd like to be able to use them. Also how easy is it to find a new axel in the correct size?

fork spacing: 95 mm (consulting sheldon this is probably 96mm + a fresh powder-coat. incidentally the wheel didn't fit before the new paint)
    Axle length: 110mm

I don't have callipers but I just measured the hub width as 77-78mm but I wouldn't put much faith that it's very accurate.

  • Solved by finding a magic combination of washers that seems to work

Feel a little silly that I couldn't make it work before. That said the only solution offered by the LBS was to hack the axle to bits.

  • essentially you want from centre of hub to tip of axle.....

empty axle > inner race (attached to hub) > grease > balls > grease > outer race (threaded onto axle) > locknut > washer/spacer > end nut > dropout of fork > QR/ axle nut

But you can do without that washer/spacer/ end nut bit if you really need, just so long as there is a cone & locknut tight up against it. CRC probably have cheap cone spanners for about £3 a pair.

  • I got a french bike with 96mm front

  • Can you fit Road QR front wheels on a fixed gear bike?

I'm thinking about putting a Mavic 2013 Ksyrium SLR Clincher Front Wheel-Tyre System (or similar) on a Kagero build but it made me wonder if a road hub is a tad wider? Black breaking surface being the main driver for this...

  • jesus man, JFGI

  • It will fit without a problem. The surface does wear off eventually...

  • Ofc I JFGI and didn't find the answer ffs!! Also didn't see any pics of that Mavic on a fixed gear bike.

Thanks JB but it didn't fit the Kagero...

  • ROAD WHEEL ON TRACK BIKE? UMAD?!?!?!?

dangerous game, nothing good can come of this.... road wheels just aren't built for skidz.

  • Well I guess lfgss doesn't index in Google too good. My bad. So I should have jfslfgss...

The fork is a touch too narrow. Close but no dice. @skidz its the front wheel!?
