Only the usual things like TT bars and the like.
Like anything, the challenge is what you make it. If a century in 5 hours isn't testing enough, train to do it in 4 etc.

I just signed up to see how long it took.
There's 80,000 places in the ballot for 20,000 riders so not too long odds on getting a place.
Now i'm thinking how much more entertaining the marathon would be if there was a sweeper van chasing all the stragglers.

or like Mario Kart?

what i'm trying to say is that it is not enough of a challenge to warrant sponsorship of someone in any sort of decent shape (although i'm not considering timed attempts) so it undermines the event if they start making it difficult to just sign up and do it without raising money.
I agree, it looked more fun than challenging and none of the charities I could see were close to me so I left it to someone who would do a better/more honest job of fundraising.

It is, or it is planned to become, a fundraising event, somewhere between the London Marathon and sitting in a bath tub of baked beans. It's actual difficulty has little to do with the fundraising aspect, that is more a function of it's profile.
I am not a fan of the charitification of everything and I rode it for myself this time, but if I get a spot next time I would seriously consider raising a bit of cash for some donkey sanctuary or other as it is the event's raison d'etre.

I think they've got set quotas for types of riders - i'd be curious to see how many actual places are allocated to charities vs normal ballot applications - and of those ballot applications they've likely got set quotas for types or riders - i.e. superfast pro-am's, am's, enthusiasts, slow-coaches, lard-arses, boris's etc....
I put a time 20 minutes slower than last years - and still got in. Might just be a toss of a coin though I guess..

GGGGGrrrrr think I'm out, checked my application details and it's got cancelled in there, SFB

If you are in a cycling club there's also the chance to do a 4 up team entry separate from the draw and charity entries.
-
• #817
I think I'm in.

I suspect it's going to be a bit mental this year, I've got guaranteed entry due to them trying to kill me last year, so I'll be off in the first wave at 6am.
This time round I'll try to a) get some sleep and b) have breakfast and finally c) not bonk.

No joy for the ballot. Going to find a charity and will rattle a few buckets...
-
• #820
So if your registration has NOT been cancelled then you are in? I'm confused!
-
• #821
Looks like my brother (dbr) didn't get in, and I did. The only difference in our application forms were our first names, so it seems totally random in our case!
-
• #822
So when you click on receipt it says 'This registration was cancelled on 28/01/2014 19:29.' that means I am out?
-
• #823
I think I'm in.
No I'm not
-
• #824
Mine says cancelled too, guess that means I'm out. Anyone actually received anything by post to verify if that site is telling the truth?
-
• #825
Mine says cancelled too, but no date. You can tell Boris is running this...
^^
yeah i get you. but it's wrong then to brand it as serious, and set such strict rules and regulations (i was under the impression they were strict about bkes allowed, i likely am wrong).
