A little help.....

  • Hi there haven't posted much before if at all. :D

Do any of you have any idea how to loosen a jammed seat post from the frame? I would really really appreciate on any pointers cheers

  • loads of great options available - mostly will depend on what frame is made of / what seatpost is made of. also what condition you want the seatpost to be in when you get it out.

  • ....my personal favourite is dissolving an aluminium seatpost out of a steel frame with caustic soda. hopefully you wont need to go that far.

  • Use the search tool. There's been a lot of threads about people sorting this. Seems putting the seatpin in a bench vise, and wiggling the frame is probably a good start, but you need to Not Snap the Seat Post. Soaking the whole bonded area with wd40 might be enough. If people have no luck, I think the last resort is chop all the exposed seat off, then immerse all the seat cluster in caustic solution, which will dissolve the seat post remains. Also ruins the paint, but won't dissolve steel tubes or braze holding the cluster together. Naturally, not a good idea if the frame is also aluminium.

'Stuck' might be a good start for searches.

  • Thank you all for the feedback, it's a BLB (please, no sniggering) steel track frame that I would like to find a new home for once I've sorted this jammed seat post problem. I'm not asking for much money but something that will go towards the new frame I'd like to buy.......

I've tried the WD40 trick but as you can imagine there is very little space between the frame and the post. Someone suggested drilling two holes under the bb and pouring coke down the tube but I think I'm gonna go with trying the clamp in the vice method.

    Thanks again.

  • If the seatpost is alu (or anything that's not steel), try the hot water/cold water technique. Worked for me recently getting a jammed post out of an old Pompino. Pour boiling water over the frame/post then pour ice water over it. Rinse and repeat.

  • If you bust the post then move smoothly to reaming the fucker out.

  • heat method is worth a shot, you could use blowtorch to get the seatpin really hot, then dip it into a bucket of cold water, if your careful, wrap the frame in a wet towel and heat just the seatpost you might get away without damaging paint.

  • Had this problem recently and after a few failed attempts I took it to a LBS. They ended up clamping the seatpost in a vice and twisted it out using the frame for leverage.
