2014-03-08 - Astronomical Observatory Stargazing ride

So a few of you will know I dabble with some telescopes for a day job, so I thought it would be cool to combine a bike ride with the chance to show off the telescopes I can get access to.

Start at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and head through central all the way North to Mill Hill and the beautiful surroundings of the Watford bypass. A relatively short 20-30 miles at a sociable pace with some curated stops at notable parts of London associated with the stars.

Once we're there we will have a tour of the 5 telescopes on site and weather depending some observing of a planet, the moon some stars etc.

From there it's 10 miles back to central or the train on Capital Connect goes to St Pancras.

As it's a small site total numbers would be limited to 20 or so maximum and I'd need numbers up front...

Cool, quite suitable for a tandem apart from the entry to Burgess park which has pedestrian barriers etc. Though it should be fine to walk it through.

Wouldn't worry, with the standard attrition rate all the reserve list will get on the ride. Especially if you're flexible enough, and attentive enough, to fill in for people who drop out on the day of the ride.

If I were a real chancer I'd probably turn up on the day anyway, even if the observatory visit is full I'm sure a few additionals tagging along for the ride round town wouldn't be a huge issue.

That's just a suggestion by the way, it's Nick's ride so it's Nick's rules.
