Never known an SU to wear out, gasket recon kits are widely available and usually come with a new float needle valve, fit new jets and needles and if things are really bad, throttle butterflies and shafts...ok, if you go that far maybe it is worn out. If you're running too rich it can often be as simple as needing new air filters or just raising the jet a touch. What car are you working on? Don't forget pre '75 don't need emissions check for MOT, just visual exhaust inspection for smoke.
