  • Yeah, kinda 'Space 1999' but I didn't realize people want to look good wearing this kind of thing.

Speaking as an owner of course.

  • Not interested in looking particularly good, but wearing an australian air max doesn't entice me

  • Need to get new heels for my grensons, anyone know a good cobbler around shoreditch / liverpool street? Been checking reviews online and it seems to be very hit and miss

  • There's a Grenson's store right at Liverpool street. Ask them?

  • Those two are lovely, what are they?

They can do it for me, but it's close to a hundred notes to have them sent back to the factory. I'll do it when it's re-soling time, but not for a simple re-heeling.

  • Oof. 5th Avenue shoes then - but it's near Charlotte/Goodge Street

Don't know anything closer to you I'm afraid.

  • That's where I usually go, but it's a right trek. Last time I was there they've misplaced my shoes and tried to give me a different, similar pair. Partly my fault as I've left my shoes there for well over 6 months, but still.

  • I went in the other day to get some polish. The guy was busy being an absolute arse to another customer. I left and bought better polish online. The shoe snob recommends Tony's (but it is of no use to you as it is in St James)

  • yeah I wasn't too impressed with how they handled the situation either tbh. Can't fault their cobblery, and they're by far the best I've used in London. That said, they've just done their job, and others have failed, they've never gone above and beyond really.

Anyway, I now have someone elses shoes in my flat that I don't want. Was so dumbfound with their approach to it + I was over 30 mins late to work already as I've waited for them to rummage around their basement to try and find them, that I accepted them and left. Doesn't feel good at all, so gonna drop them off next time I'm in town. Rather have no shoes at all than someone elses.

  • Went to Hoxton Street Shoe Repair today with my grensons to give them a new heel. Had plenty of great reviews on google, so gave them a shot. Really friendly guy working there, £14.50 for a re-heel, £17.50 with sides sanded down to natural. Got a text when my shoes were ready to be picked up later the same day.

That was a simple job, but i'll go back with trickier stuff too, they seem to know what they're doing

Top are plain old l.l.bean iron worker boots and bottom are "to boot new York"

Will Grenson still do factory repairs when modifications have been done by someone else? AFAIK most brands won't touch them once they've been altered by a cobbler.

  • Snobbish tactics by the shoemakers. A heal can last a matter of months on some shoes and it's impractical to be sending them back so often. I believe Trickers charge £120 for a rebuild. At those costs I can't see how it would be an issue for them to undo someone else's repair work.

  • Like.

Heard the same thing which is a bit silly. I certainly hope that White's doesn't have those rules as they'll be re-building my boots in a few years, but i'll probably go through a good 3-4 heels until then

  • You have a pair of White's boots kboy?
I recently sent in an order for SDs.

  • That's what I got. Heavy as, but I love them. Mines EE width so on the big side, but still ok. You won't be disappointed!

What leathers did you choose? How much was it all in?

  • I turned my 15 year old Redwing 8804s into 8133s... Never been happier... #everythingblack

  • ^^ They haven't received my letter yet.
Pretty basic make-up with brown dress, all eyelets, single midsole, standard trim, celastic toe, standard heel, Vibram 269, toe cap, maybe swing last (we need to talk about sizing). Obviously no price yet, but our dollar continues to dive relative to the US one...
I really fell for the look of the one on the left there.

  • It looks great!

  • Lush, would wear all four of those

  • Here's hoping it all works out, I have some heel issues that these may help to alleviate.
Apparently there's quite an extensive break-in period before boots and feet get along - lots of 5 minute walks.

  • Did you go straight to Whites, or via a uk shop? Can't remember the name but there's someone online that can sort out custom orders

I'm tempted to get another pair in black, but it'll have to wait until next year

  • Just read this about the heels:

moreover & most importantly, imo, is the comfortability of walking. angled heels weren't just designed for looks. they compensate for the added height of the heels for a more natural gait... ie, a block high heel would hit the pavement quicker than an angled one on each stride, not allowing a full motion of a stride

Interesting. Angled heel looks odd to me, but makes sense no that I've read that
