Quick update:
Spacer arrived and it looks very well machined;
Only things left now are cranks off Howard, chainrings possibly off ebay (anyone got any idea what these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Deore-LX-104bcd-26-36-48t-mountain-touring-bike-chainrings-/161209133309?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2588d028fd would go for?) and freewheel off a friend. Does 48:18 sound alright for a mtb on road?
