I think a lot of people get over excited when they're bidding tbh, either that or as you said, something fishy going on. It seems that way, until you factor in the commission, the cost of a new hard drive, the chances it might be dead (friend got a "bargain" HP that turned out to be totally knackered) it just isn't worth it.
Funny enough, I bought the white trek hybrid at the last sale (I think the same one with the cameras you mentioned) went to collect it the next day, and someone had nicked it...it's a funny old place.
