Acknowledging that I may be jumping to assumptions - no, your chainwhip just isn't good enough.
I have a Var whip at home and Park ones at work and whenever I'm not in either of those places and have to use someone else's I'm shocked by how flimsy some whips are.
I think my Var whip came with 3/32" chain so I swapped it for some 1/8" straight off and I enlarged the hole where it attached so that I could use a split link to attach the chain so it could be repaired easily but I don't think I've had to do so yet.
