You clearly have no idea how to spin. 18mph and your cadence is 60rpm. Grannies on shopper bikes would be able to out accelerate you at lights.

Since it will theoretically be a large group I should emphasise a few things:
Ride is leaving Brixton no later than 9:10. If you're any later you'll have to catch up.
Bring lights. Yes we shouldn't need them, but by the time you're back in London you will be grateful you have some.
Be ready to single-up in town. Also be courteous on the lanes. The road opens up past Purley so be smart until then. We'll also create a bit of havoc for cars going up Turners and Ditchling - expect some honks - so please just smile and nod and we'll re-group at the top.
**Getting back to London is up to you. **Four person groupsave is a cheap way to get back, but considering we may have to stagger our journey back on different trains think of something to do until the trains are free. Like drink. The Evening Star pub sounds like a winner for those hanging around for Brighton beers (55/56 Surrey Street BN1 3PB close to the station), or there is an M&S in the station for tramp/train beer supplies. Yes, I recommend M&S because I am middle-class.
FANX.

I don't really want to have an easy commute. Due to living in Brighton my whole ride is uninterrupted by lights, cars and such. It's basically a mash from house to work along the seafront, so I usually try to average 22+. Not the greatest setup to step outside of Brighton but it's not too hard to grab a few more cogs. I'm not one to flapping my legs at top speed because I wan't to look good off the lights...

You will look like an idiot pushing a big gear while pensioners start off faster than you.

Come now, James. I know you're getting on a bit, but you're not quite of pensionable age yet.
-

you don't need 109GI to average 22+ along brighton seafront, low 80s max (to ride with a normal cadence)

sigh Why such hate? As said before, Brighton is a very simple city to cycle around in compared to London. My commute is rarely interrupted by lights and as such I have little interest in focusing on my instant acceleration. I have little trouble picking up to cruising speed after a couple of rotations, guess it helps to be clipped in. I mean check

possibly a little harsh, sorry
my point is that you look worse pushing and mashing a big gear, rather than elegantly spinning away. your argument is somehow you look better gurning away as you try to get going, like a five star nodder

Annoyed I can't make this ride. I'm off to a bastard Barn Dance with the Mrs and her dad. I know, priorities right.. ffs.

49/18 is my favourite ratio, though sram don't make a 49t chainring so on 48/19 instead.

I'm currently on 49/18 for the faster bike, I do appreciate the difference between it and 48/19 when I speed up but I feel I can still average 20mph for a while on either.

I suppose, I just get off the saddle and start the slog. Hmm my commute would be WAY too easy otherwise and I would get very little exercise. The only thing that makes the journey somewhat sloggish is if theres the typical 10-15mph headwind. Each to their own of course

Spinning will give you more of a workout, why they offer spinning and not mashing classes, it's good for your fitness and your joints.
Got the thing from Dolan so couldn't do a nice 52 / *
It's lovely to ride until you have to slow down, sadly. I used to ride my Bianchi geared on the 52/13 for almost a year without changing the gears. Annoyingly I did once a few months ago and snapped the derailleur hanger due to lack of use, hence the final straw leading me to fixed ( rode a friends out in California and loved it ). Brake is going on this week so no more busted knees!
