I'm 5'7" and my road bike is set up much like Cavs. I could ride a medium in many frames. But for most parts smalls fit better. Often with these smaller sizes the frame measurements dont look so different. But the slacker headtube allows a shorter stem, and you dont need to slam your saddle forward so much as seat tube is steeper. So the final bike is better suited to a smaller rider, even if at a quick glance the frame dimensions appear very similar.
These changes affect the bikes handling. Even if the fit triangle it set up the same. I suspect Cav felt better belter sprinting at 70kph with the small under him.
