In his defense, Woolley did ask for sensible replies, as oppose to abuse!
It's 'defence' in the UK, and 'as opposed to'. If you want to be a condescending cunt, work on improving your written English first; like I did.

You didn't post an opinion: it was a criticism of the advice previously offered (to buy 2nd hand).
Chain's and cassettes are consumable items, so whether you buy a 2nd hand bike or a new one, they will need replacement.
Why you think a used bike will probably need a new crank is anyone's guess.
Perhaps the advice to buy 2nd hand needs clarification: "don't buy a fucked 2nd hand bike".
I think the advice to buy S/H is fine but somebody with limited knowledge should be aware that there could be untold problems with a S/H bike. It's not the answer for anybody who doesn't know what problems to look for.

In my defense, I AM American. 'Oppose' was a typo but I wasn't expecting to have my post marked by a literary genius.
My spelling of 'criticizing', in a later post is also incorrect in the UK.
If you want to be a condescending cunt and grammar check posts, please correct all, or none.

'Criticizing' is correct in the UK if you follow the OED rules.

I bought a 2010 Langster steel in new condition for £190 last year, wasn't the prettiest or the lightest bike I've owned but it was solid and withstood the abuse of being a cargo bike most days for me. Second hand doesn't mean parts will fail left right and centre, it will still cost less to maintain than a create which WILL inevitably break at some point.

No, you're an idiot.

Love you XBeing an American is not a defence - it's a fucking asset. America gave me Navy SEAL training at age 8, taught me how to install democracy in a failing regime at age 14 and enabled me to make love to Cindy Crawford in my '76 Corvette at age 16 (I was slow to blossom).
Don't ever apologise for being American. However, you can apologise for poor grammar.

That proposal mean it'll be even riskier for peds and cyclists alike just so someone could get home a couple second earlier in their cars.
Great grammar.

The resurrection of dead threads is rarely viewed positively. Maybe you should just accept this fact and stop flogging the even more deceased horse that is your wounded pride.

My gf worked at a online bike shop and got one of these for approx £100 trade...
I just removed most of the parts to put on a different frame. I was actually really impressed, the cranks feel solid and well made, the BB and hubs are sealed. The weld quality was alot better than other create/nologo/unipack etc BSO. The only really naff bits were the rubber rim tapes that were disintegrating, the cheap tyres and the white chain.
For £150 new I think it's a bargain.

not sure if this is the same viking from long long time ago, but my friend just built one up, full restoration job, and it looks mighty sweet. -

^^ I think that was one of the most frustrating things about creates. They didn't actually *have *to be shit.
Without trawling back through the thread, iirc the main issues were the chain and BB - hardly the most expensive parts. The wheels would have been a lot better if they'd gone for a less fancy looking design and stuck with a vanilla 36h x3.
Although most people think £199 for a new cool looking bike is good value for money, we all know that £350 will get you something much better, and £200 second hand is a lot to play with for a cheap runaround.
That said I know one that had a new crankset/BB and chain pretty much immediately has been going for years now.

This.
It need building up by a decent mechanic, but having said that, replacing the necessary part such as the BB would drive the cost up to be usable.

Sorry I wasn't talking about the Viking.
What bother me the most about the Viking is that it was fitted together by complete and utterly clueless mechanic.

How so, saddle not scobled enough for ya?

Because every Viking I've seen come to my shop are on the verge of falling apart.
