That person is wrong, you do get twice as many patches if you skid using either foot forwards with some ratios but not all. 44/16 (72.5GI) has 4 patches or 8 if you skid with either foot forward, 48/16 (79GI) has 1 patch and 1 patch only, take your wheel out and rotate it every few days in relation to your chainring or get a 17 for the back and have 17 patches and 74.5GI on your 48 front.
