Ukuleles arguably (read: definitely) shitter than posh shoes as far as I'm concerned so you know, not all bad. Just different. Personally, I thank hipsterfication for the ready availability of decent coffee too.
The uke shop only moved in well into the 00's and I can't remember what was there in the late 90's. Possibly a greasy spoon, possibly nothing at all. There were a lot of empty shops then. The recording studio in the basement of the uke shop was run by friends of mine. They moved into there from Whitechapel before getting priced out and moving to Limehouse a couple of years ago. They actually moved into the building I used to have a share in a studio in. The circle of life.
The other partner in the studio moved to Ramsgate in an attempt to bring flat whites, cupcakes, craft beer and clanky indie pop to the far Kent coast. If the regular mentions of his cafe, recording studio and live music venue I hear on 6music are anything to go by... he's getting it done too.
