This. It's tricky to photograph without a more professional approach, as the silver bits get burned out while the camera gets the overall exposure 'right'. I'll have another go at it if I can remember how to do manual exposure on my camera. As well as the relief, the colour is slightly different as the engraved one cuts away the whole anodisation layer back to bare metal, whereas the laser just ablates the dye and leaves the clear anodised finish, which is very slightly yellow compared with raw metal.

Mr Tester, just an inquiry, are the anodiser and engraver in the same location? I was wondering if *Flight of the Condor *engraved pre-anodise with the Condor shape engraved post-anodise might look pretty trick... If this is not doable then no worries.

It's doable, but as I said it will be extra as I have to get it engraved then anodised then engraved again. The two shops are about 10 miles apart, but that's not really the issue, it's the getting one cap set up on the engraving machine twice. Probably +£5 for the extra work.

Today's top tip for reducing production waste:
Instead of handing the machinist more than enough material and asking for n finished products, hand him a length of bar and tell him you'll pay the same unit cost for however many he can get out of it. First batch took about 10mm of bar stock each, this lot took <9mm :-) -
Options which avoid extra expense and delay:
- Have both lettering and logo in the same style
- Have the whole design in Type 2 and then get your paint out and fill the logo with the colour of your choice.
The Condor's eye is only about 0.16mm wide (minor axis), which means the height of that little island in the engraving will be more than the breadth, i.e. it's going to be more of a crag than an atoll. It might be OK, but I think I'd be inclined to go for laser etch over engraving.
If you want a more subtle effect, maybe just laser etching the outline would be better?

This should give a better idea of the difference in appearance between Type 3 and Type 4
And here's the slight difference between batch 1 and batch 2 blanks. You'll get a random selection as there are still a few batch 1 blanks left. The design has been tweaked by a fraction of a millimetre to make the bolt closer to flush with the top of the cap.
