Can't really comment on "favourite" as I've mostly ridden 46/16. I find this fine for my commute which is mostly flat and I can also get around Richmond Park.
I started on the track at HHV a couple of years ago and was using the same ratio. Left me utterly knackered each session so at the end of last summer I changed to a bigger ratio - 48/15. This will be an interim step as I didn't want to jump too much in one go but it immediately felt much better.
