  • And it's still cheaper than running something new and shite on finance.

Someone I know is on about getting something new and basic which will cost the best part of £200 a month for 5 years, then you give them a couple more grand or give it back, which to me is just nuts. And they think I am the crazy one for wanting an E39 with pretty low miles for about one year's worth of their finance

  • The Panzerwagen is back from Automerc after being given a thorough going over to catch up with 5 years of inadequate maintenance. It may have just cost me the best part of 2 grand, but fuck me, it drives like its brand new now. I absolutely love it. No rattles, squeaks, creaks or other noises, sure footed handling, quiet engine, snappy gearchanges, tremendously eager performance, and no more leaks :-) it's bloody brilliant. :-)

And it's still cheaper than running something new and shite on finance.

    W124s are ace, period.
I once nearly sold one of mine to Mr Nick Froome.
Bar the SLS, parts are quite cheap and much DIY is easy.
Front lower balls joints are a right sod. Did those on my W202...never again.

  • Because mine's a 24 valve and they have bigger brakes it needed the whole lower suspension arm replacing rather than just the ball joint. The spring was broken at the top too. Funnily enough the right hand side is perfectly fine. That and the new anti-roll bar bushes have completely transformed the handling. (They also balanced the wheels and set all the steering geometry too).
I also had them pressure test the cooling system, and fix the two leaks they found. Then it was flushed and refilled with new coolant. That's the end of my overheating worries.
They also replaced the seals on the cam cover, and the timing chain cover, which has eliminated the oil leaks, and they replaced the serpentine belt tensioner which has eliminated the rattle. The parking brake cables and shoes were replaced too, so now that works too. Add a full maintenance service on top of that and it's in perfect mechanical condition now.

I don't think there is a new car (that I could afford the repayments on) which would generate the enormous grin that my W124 does.

    Quite. One to keep, now.
Was explaining to my ten year old this morning how a mint ten year old car like a 7 series is now worth 2 grand but cost 70 grand new, whereas a 70 grand house ten years ago, is now 'worth' multiples more.

  • They test it

Interesting, I'm surprised, but if they did test it and found that it was the best, who am I to argue?

Only other things I'd say would be how did they drive it? Will their MPG findings be easy to replicate or will you have to drive like a Jedi at all times? Also, is it big enough for your needs, and is it within budget?

If so, then go for it.

Nearside always gets more fucked due to the crap on the side of the road, more potholes, bouncing up kerbs, sunken manhole covers and drains.

  • Makes sense. Especially as it used to live in rural parts.
I thought it was good before. It's a revelation now.

  • Robert Kubica, ruling in 2014.
You need 15 minutes for this, but it's worth it. Truly committed flat-out driving in rain and fog. At night.

  • ^^Fffuuuuuu. Respect, esp with that lamp going bananas and then having a biiig moment at 2:45

  • That vid was mad. I only saw 5 mins of it but yeah, that post, the lamp, the bit where he's in a field and rejoins just before what looks like a small stone castle...

  • I didn't think this was due until 2015?

  • Delivery is Mid to late 2014 ;)

  • Saw this by the roadside yesterday. It spoke to me. It said, "Dear teenage Dub scenesters, please take your fake patina, roll it up very tightly and fit it right up your hairless little arse. Lots of love, from cars that actually get driven."

  • Really says that too you?

You need more lessons in language me thinks...

  • My apologies. The last word was supposed to be "arses".

  • Looks like it has been driven through the desert.

  • Yes.

  • Engine note at 2.40 is why I bought my car.

Ah, they must have brought it forward to steal some BMW M4 customers.

Although with BMW ditching the V8, they might steal a few anyway.

It looks like a LOT of fun.

He could save a tonne of cash and smile just as much with one of these:

    (Or the Toyota GT86)

Plus the front isn't gash :P

For £3.5k + fitting Litchfield will bump it up to 280hp for you too...

  • He likes himself a V8 and the refinement and comfort of the Lexus is more what he looking for especially at his age!
It is a shame about the front, hopefully WALD will release something nice to replace it
