I'd have probably just wrapped it in ptfe tape.
if the replacement goes the same way I'll defo try this before another 12 notes.

Tried that, but thanks for the suggestion :(
Even if there was an airlock, could that explain hot water and bubbles coming out of the boiler via the water hose (definitely not the over pressure hose) into the water container?
If anyone can come up with anything else to try I'd be up for it as I'd obviously rather not pay to have it looked at if possible.
You tried resetting the internal thermostat button Pete? It probably won't help in this case but takes 10 secs to try just in case. I had no idea it was there until my Silvia blew up last year (see upthread ^) and, after much googling, it seemed a lot of other people's problems got solved by that.
Not mine sadly.. -

After browsing through this thread last night I decided to fire up the Gaggia Colour this morning which I got free from my old job. I usually use a drip coffeemaker or a Moka pot, I stopped using the Gaggia due to consistency issues with the espresso.
Was quite nice this morning although I was late and had to give the coffee to my bird in bed. Once I rectify the little pissing out the side it should be good.

The split is now bottom to top, meaning no more espresso until I can replace it, about to order via this site - anyone used them, any hassles?
Mine has always had a split in it - works fine and means you can pinch it together to remove it. Very little if any water/puly-caff comes out of the split when backflushing

^ this split has got worse over time it's now full length and spits lots.

Krups Expert GVX231 Burr Coffee Grinder: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & HomeI've been getting pretty good results with this surprisingly! Rescued from my dad as he wasn't using it (ungrateful so-and-so ... )
Me too - it works pretty well! I use the coarsest grind for Filter, though, which is JUST about right. Rubbish for french press though...

IIRC, somewhere in Edinburgh ...

Exactly Branwen... where in Edinburgh? Seeing as I live in Edinburgh...
Dracula - you can mod those Krups grinders to do espresso really well. Its baw ache each time you change beans though.

Blackwood Coffee on Morningside Road. It's a nice place. The Canny Mans pub is over the road which is worth a look too.

^ I fully agree. Too time consuming and knuckle damaging. I'd like to get one, TTM has this I think and really rates it:

I want to get an electric grinder but not enough space in my ridiculously small kitchen at the mo
Oh hai Jim, my fellow (somewhat disillusioned) Gaggia owner. :)

Thanks! Knew you had one - wasn't sure how much it cost.Is there a term for gifting yourself items already gifted to family members? ;)
^ got one of those krupps grinders available for postage if either of you want it.
The mc2 is a good upgrade though, worth the cost.
How much rhb?

anyone know where I can get a replacement gasket/seal/washer for a Vev Vigano Klassica 6 cup Stove Top Espresso Maker? These particular items seem hard to come by.

My new boss has asked me for advice about getting an espresso machine for the office we're going to move in to. I suggested a proper commercial machine may be overkill but he doesn't think so. Plumbing in won't be a problem.
I was thinking of a 1 group machine, maybe a Rocket rotary one, but I'm really not sure.
Where's best to find second hand commercial machines and grinders?
Anyone got any ideas? -

Aren't you forever going to be showing people how to make espressos?
I'd have suggested a bean to cup machine.

Anyone got any ideas?ebay and if you google 'London espresso repairs' or 'London coffee machines' a bunch of those places have refurb machines available. Also the coffee forum(s) have machines pop up.

Grinders – the new Baratza Encore (£140) is decent, only been using it a few weeks and only for filter but it's meant to be good for espresso. Weighing beans in and grounds out, you only lose about 0.2g which is pretty impressive. You could easily adjust from filter to espresso and back again if you remember the numbers.

Regarding buying commercial machines, I'd never buy another which I couldn't confirm had either been used with soft water or had been regularly descaled.

Anyone got any ideas? That would be awesome but my worry would be:
Takes a lot longer to make coffee
Having to train people/have 20 odd people messing about with an expensive machine, could prove to be more hassle/cost than it's worth...But hey, it's his cash, right?!

I ended up ordering this
http://www.bellabarista.co.uk/espresso-machines/plumbed-and-internal-tank/package-deal-giotto-evoluzione-v2-eureka-mignon-mk2-matt-black.html
I'll set the grind size and timing so people just have to push a button to get the right amount in the porta filer then turn on the machine with the handle. -

I started descaling my Gaggia Factory 105 (a La Pavoni clone), ended up stripping the whole thing down and ordering £50 of spares/upgrades. Mostly washers/seals/nuts but I went for a nice brass piston to replace the current plastic one. Should make pulling shots a smoother action.
No espresso until the bits arrive though...
Brass piston- interesting, where did you order the parts from?
This was the scale I found in mine when I took it apart Christmas 2012.
