Looking forward for the build thread, Rich!

Cheers Kal, should be an interesting one, 1 1/4 inch steerers and all kinds of crazy stuff!

Not to put a spanner in the works .. But if the Spinergy's are 8/9/10 spd neither the Force 22 or Dura Ace 9000 are going to work as the 11-speed Shimano and SRAM cogset stack height is taller than 10-speed.
If you're interested the real world weights for both group sets are listed here http://fairwheelbikes.com/c/forums/topic/complete-group-weights/
And personally I'd stay away from 9000 second hand. Early adopters on Weight Weenies are reporting cassettes exploding and shifters chewing up gear cables

this is pretty handy:

Nope that's cool, it's the exact kind of help I'm looking for!
So I need to be looking for 10 speed rear cassette...What's the lightest I can get in this arena?
-
• #7
Standard SRAM Force 10spd?

Lightest would be too look for a deal on last years Sram Red (Merlin maybe?). There was a 7900 Dura Ace group set in classifieds, but 7900 had shifting problems if the cable radius around the bars was too tight .. you will need to budget on top end cables to keep the friction to a minimum.
Other then that almost all new top end groups are now 11 so you'd be looking at 105, Centaur level. But truthfully I'd pop into Evans with my card and get a ride on some different set ups to see which suits you best as this is your 'first venture into gears' ..

I have a close friend who's just finished building a carbon boardman with SRAM Force, which he recently bought from Halfords online. He's also an employee so gets substantial discount. I think il have a ride on his bike to see how I like it, but I think I'm looking at either Force, 105 or Centaur....
I really wanted to buy that 7900 group, and tried my best to, but it was not meant to be unfortunately! -

recon titanium cassette from far east?

Cough, mumble, Ultegra 6800, splutter mumble.
Not sure about this but you might be able to run 11 speeds with one of these: http://wheelsmfg.com/accelerator-11-speed.html

10 speed Dammit .. Wheels free hub body is the limiting factor
-
• #13
Ah, fair enough, I thought that that cassette was designed to run 11 cogs, spaced for Campag, on a 10 speed Shimano freehub body.

I've got a sram apex/rival group on the surly I'm selling. Could split if your interested?

I have run both Sram Force 2012 & Campy Centaur 2013 Red / Black on my Enigma Espirit, and I can say Sram Force was a more quality product. Maybe a tad lighter but hardly noticeable. But the shifting was leaps ahead.

Thanks for the nudge root, but if I go SRAM I think I'm going to go Force 10spd.
I'm also considering Ultegra, as there's a lot about for sale at the moment... How does that fair in comparison to the SRAM Force?
-
• #17
Ultegra works (being shimano), sram doesent ;)
-
• #18
You'd need to ride it, you are welcome to take my Serotta out for a spin if you are ~6'2"

• #19
Haha this is why I was asking about your crankset, it looked awesome in black also!

Unfortunately I'm a northern monkey......

So boiling this down to 3 groups:
SRAM Force
Shimano Ultegra 6700/50
Dura Ace 7900Although I have a feeling which one I'm already sold on....

So, ive gone with this:
Dura Ace 7700
All paid up today, and should hopefully be with me by early next week
Frame should arrive tomorrow...
Let Build Thread Commence!Anyone got a 7700 bottom bracket? Octalink 68mm x 109mm? English Threadizzle?
Please?!?......
After having broken through the n+1 barrier, I'm venturing into the realm of gears.....
Problem is I really don't have a clue when it comes to groupsets.
The frame is a Cannondale 2.8, so pretty lightweight and very stiff, the rear is 130 with English BB.
Almost 100% that I'm going to be slotting on a pair of rad Spinergy's with a shimano freehub, spaced at 130, for 8/9/10 spd.
With downtube shifter bosses and band on front mech hanger, il buy the shimano cable stop adapters for the shifter bosses and the mech hanger converter so I can use STI's and braze on mech if necessary.
After browsing briefly through chainreaction and wiggle my preferences are directed toward SRAM Force 22 if I were to buy new, however I think I'd prefer to save some money and find something second hand like dura ace 9000....
Can anyone help me out here with a light groupset they have for sale or even suggest something I haven't thought of?
Cheers
