Lockrings don't often just break. They're stronger than the hub threads. It's quite likely you didn't have the correct lockring, you had it too loose allowing the cog to smack into it when you tried to remodel the neighbour's 4x4 or you installed it incorrectly - perhaps cross-threaded or using a screwdriver to tighten it which could weaken the ring.
Best course of action is a DA lockring and putting your brakes back on and if you want to get all internet hard man, do one >>>
