  • I was using couch surfing more as a verb, got some friends who have used warm showers and they spoke very highly of it, though they had one rather strange encounter with a keen nudist...

You're probably right, although I'm going to try and plan a route that keeps in touch with civilisation I will probably take those bits and bobs with me to be safe.

  • Some bits have arrived

  • Almost there with the bike, need to decide whether to keep these wheels or upgrade them to something a little tougher. Also thinking of getting a bar bag, so if anyone has a smallish ortlieb one let me know.

I went for 28c paselas, a tubus logo rack and sks chromoplastics along with a thomson stem and post with my arione

  • I thought i was mad touring with single speed. Your trip sounds mad and cool. Good luck and good choice of bike.

  • Look like you're carrying a fair bits of weight on the rear, take the rear wheel to a LBS to have it checked out (spokes tension and the like).

If you're seriously looking for a tougher OTP wheels, you can't go wrong with the M:Wheel Mavic A319 laced to Deore hubs*, don't think you need to worry about the front.

Put a big mudflap on the front otherwise your feet and drivetrain gonna get soaked if the weather turned.

*can't find any information about the spacing whether it's 130 or 135.

  • Did you have any trouble fitting the rack? Just tried to put a blackburn rack on a caadx and the rack stays were way too narrow.

    What's the front brake?

  • Stay as in the seatstay mount? Just bend it in shape.

  • no at the dropouts.

edit: rack (blackburn ex2) is 140mm wide and dropouts are 175mm, tubus logo is good for 150-180mm but a bit pricey.

have a good trip by the way.

  • I plan to cycle through the southern states, starting probably in Florida and ending up in San Francisco.

Nice choice, it's my dream to ride the highway one. However as you go to and not from SF you'll be on the mountain side. Don't forget to stop at Mc Way waterfall (Big Sur)

IMO you might need wider tires, US roads are shitty.
