Ah, so I just checked and it's not the over pressure hose that is getting hot and letting air out - it's the one from the pump.
I just did a test and same problem - once when I turned the pump on no water came though at all, then when I eventually got coffee to come through and it was very slow and what came out was watery and a bit tepid.
Repair shop it is then I guess :(
