I was a computer science student at the time. There's a Wi-Fi finder on my keyring, because back then wireless networks were rare enough that you had to wander around looking for one and they were often open. No 3G/4G then... And a 512MB flash drive on my keyring which cost a fortune. I'd love to know what those printed-out papers were - the research is probably already practically implemented, commercialised and obsolete by now.
