  • You're so clever.

  • Happy to help. :P

  • Can anyone suggest a decent android phone that isn't enormous (iphone sized is ideal). I'm due an upgrade (currently have a galaxy s2 which I like but is starting to die) and want to get my money's worth.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

  • S3 mini

  • want to get my money's worth.

Switch to sim-only and buy a Nexus 5.

  • Thanks all,
    I'll suss them out :)

  • Get a Moto G...

  • Agh. I've broken the screen on my HTC One X.

Looks like it's replaceable, is this the part I need?

    ebay

  • I love my moto G!

  • Those of you who've got a network locked Moto G (e.g. Tesco PAYG), is the OS still the very basic Android, i.e. no bloatware?

  • Samsung have resumed their 4.3 OTA rollout with an updated build. Hopefully this one isn't the clusterfuck that their first attempt was. Finally off 4.1.3

new O2 s4 booted and updated to 4.3 immediately, nice

  • So as part of the permissions for the new Facebook app on android it wants permission to read my text messages, modify my calendar and send emails without permission, access my contacts, see who I've phoned and who's phoned me, turn my wifi on and off, see what other apps I'm running with most of those being new on this update.

    Time to uninstall it.

  • ^yep. About to do the same. Or can someone recommend a good permission control app?

  • Just use the web mobile version, that's what I do... Less rubbish to contend with...

  • uninstalled fb app long time ago - no more annoying notifications.

  • Just use the delete your account and stop using faceache, that's what I do... Less rubbish to contend with...

    .

  • Fair point, well made...

  • Anyone (still) using Field Trip?

I was thinking about trying it for longer car journeys - if I could reduce its permissions and stop it posting shit back to NSA Google. Does it work in the car or do you need to be walking around for maximum effect?

  • Anybody have any views on Chromecast?

My AV receiver does a good job with Airplay which my girlfriend uses a lot. I really want to be able to play Google Play Music and Netflix on my telly.

I expect that Chromecast is my only option? I've got XBMC on my Pi but that doesn't seem to give me many options other than Airplay or DLNA, both of which are covered by my AV receiver.

  • I've got an Xbox 360 that would at least do Netflix if it didn't want to fucking charge me for gold membership just for the right to pay for Netflix. Cunts!

  • Get a telly that you can play Netflix (amongst other) without an external device.

  • I'm looking at chrome cast too best place in uk to buy?

  • Best place to buy is the US. Otherwise you're looking at Amazon but with a hefty markup.

I've got one, Netflix is OK, not much different to xbox, etc and, on my cursory play, I couldn't change the region so although I could cast US stuff to it it wouldn't play on the Chromecast. I'm sure there are ways round this but they appear to involve faffing with your router setup which I couldn't be bothered with.

Google play music is nice, open it on your phone and just select anything as you would do normally. This is what I really wanted it for and it works fine. Bear in mind the only output is HDMI though so you really want some form of home cinema system/tv connected to hi-fi to make the most of it.

  • There is a Google Play plugin for Xbmc, but it only plays the stuff you've uploaded. Not additional things you've added to your library/searched for.
