  • Architect Sam Martin has come up with designs for SkyCycle, a bike network above the capital's streets. Boris has described the proposals as "interesting".

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2198032/SkyCycle-Artists-impression-gives-stunning-vision-Boris-planned-elevated-London-bike-network.html

It may be prohibitively expensive though. What do you think?

  • Doesn't stop people from riding with headphone.

    #boris

  • Long story short; this won't happen, move along.

  • in that form it would cost far too much to ever see the light of day

but I think utilising space alongside railways is a good idea

  • They could've easily done this in Shoreditch, but oh no, they decided to destroy it.

  • 2012?

  • hip-pie in the sky

  • I'm here for pie.

  • "Mr Martin, director of Exterior Architecture, who admits to giving up cycling in London because he found it too dangerous added that the raised network was the only option left to expand cycling in London."

Cretin. why not suggest to boris that he actually implement some of the stuff the cyclists are telling him would be helpful instead of poncy schemes that just recycle what someone else has done

  • I was thinking about this, it's a safe, un-polluted and congested area safe from motor vehicles three storys high above London. Nice place to have a picnic!

  • Southbank & Barbican have both tried to separate people from streets by raising things up. Rubbish ideas.

To some extent Milton Keynes has toyed with this separation idea. No-one cycles there. Literally no-one.

crap 60s obsession with fast roads >>>>>>>>>>>>

  • I wouldn't use it. I'm terrified of heights and i can see it moving in the wind already

  • the only consolation about this turd of an idea is that it'll never happen.

/also, wasn't this news this time last year?

  • Between crimbo and new year is a mini silly season.

Highline is lush in the way a newyorican scheme could only be

I went on a road test day with Trek in Milton Keynes, the redways are great for getting out of the city into the lanes without having to go across any crazy junctions/major A-roads

Compared to trying to get out of Birmingham, it's bliss

  • Obviously imaginary streaks of the colour blue in London sky is the way forward.

Of course the insane idea of banning non disabled private cars and H.G.V. in central London is beyond the realms of any reason, and totally impossible to introduce, ever !

  • put fucking cars on elevated LOLways.

  • Starchitects.....

  • Well, that once was the plan.

The only bits built were the Westway and the approach to the Blackwell Tunnel. There is a spur to now where on the Westway. I think it was meant to take the road down to Vauxhall Bridge...

The whole thing collapsed mainly because local communities objected to their destruction to build urban motorways. We also had real and functioning local governement and democracy in London.

In fairness that was tried once but we ended up with Birmingham

That was the first of the (four?) planned London Ringways, I think. If they had finished them the cost would have been eye-watering. An interesting chapter in urban design. A few other cities in the UK had some genuinely terrifying schemes lined up in that period too - Birmingham was the only one that became reality

  • ^^ As documented in episode 2 of Unfinished London

  • Was it me or did it say we pay £1 per commute? Good money raiser but what if you don't have a pound/ want to pay, say you ride twice a day there an back that's £4 times by say 5 days in working week £20 a week... Sorry to sound like a poor per but that will add up....

  • Ride on the roads.
