My dad and I just dropped a car off at a pub with a view to giving some folks a lift home later (we're walking there). We took my mum and dad's shitheap Apollos with us and rode them home. One of the funniest half hours I've had on a bike followed my dad saying "shall we cut across this field"? I did ok I guess - wished I had my Tricross ss with me. But watching my old man clatter into swamps of mud while two very conservative walkers with those fibre glass poles and fleece hats pretended we weren't ruining their Boxing Day stroll was good value! Only bummer was I was wearing converse.

Crumbs.
Am I asking for trouble by riding through the Kent and Sussex lanes to Hastings on Monday?

It seems that sitting on the sofa drinking booze and eating my own weight in paté for the last two weeks has had a significant impact on my fitness. Got a little lost at Sevenoaks and ended up doing more miles and hills than I probably should have, feel fucking wrecked. Nice weather though! http://www.strava.com/activities/102379591

Fixed 180 rpm from Purbeck viewpoint to Studland ferry. It rained. Some other stuff.

Followed the Westerley Reliability route. It was a bit lumpy for someone operating with only half a lung.

A little loop taking in Swains and Ally Pally with Mrs Steves (Catydid). She particularly enjoyed Swains - her first time up it was Xmas day on the tandem!

Fantastic ride that, did it in March. Best bit was coming up to Studland and having to slow for a fox hunt about to set off. We then pretended not to be totally appalled by it because they were dishing out fruit cake and hot sausages to the toff masses gathering, scoffed plates of them and carried on our way.

Why?
It's 70km with coffee and toilets like, right there when you want them.

A couple of years of track riding immunes you to things like scenery so you can get just the job done

If I wanted coffee and toilets I'd ride 40k out to Great Missenden or similar and then turn around. Isn't there a similar option for you?

It's not so much the scenery as the cars getting in the way and the threat of speeding tickets from plod who are always there when I pop in.
I grew up in Bromham, very close to Bedford - it's got nothing at all going for it, other than the riverbank as you say but that's a five minute gaze at best. Bedford's about as interesting as my armpit.
