Sounds like fun.
As for organising, I think you just volunteered.
Date, time, route, checkpoints, someone to man the checkpoints...? -

I don't think I've met a single person on this forum yet, I'm also a uni student so I'm not native to the area (thus don't know obvious routes, maps etc) and I haven't got any "cycling friends"
Someone a little more established maybe

Get on those hill climb races you were talking about as well neil!
Yeah I think that will happen towards the end of January.
My thoughts are this:
Find a stupidly steep hill.
Everyone who wants to enter pays £5.
You can have 3 attempts (accounting for traffic etc).
Winner takes all.Only thoughts are timing it, do we go on what Strava says or some other form of sophisticated timing.
Afterwards head to a pub so people can compare times and where the winner would hopefully get the first round in.
In terms of hills was thinking something central in town, maybe Albion Hill or Sussex Street as they don't tend to get a lot of traffic.

Bear Road ftw
-

No timing, head to head races until we have a winner
-

Sussex Street or Richmond Street would be better than Bear Rd in terms of traffic surely.
There's gonna be no way to congregate at the bottom of Bear Road to form a start line because of roundaboutfromhell

Cheers Paul. Myself and Lewis are going to have a nosey about and see what will work.
I've got another idea shamelessly stolen from Tp88:
http://thebrokenline.co.uk/resolving-the-resolution/
We could have a local segment of the week, where the winner picks the next week segment.
It might be a bit of a ball ache keeping score but the segment idea looks fun.

Segment of the week is a good idea. I know that goes on subconsciously anyway among us local riders.
Don't be afraid to check out places like Westdene, Hangleton, Mile Oak. So much hillage that goes untapped.

We also need to consider proximity to a decent pub with heated outdoor area where we can fit bikes.

In for Hill Climb & Alley Cat...

Im down, but can't do anything hill wise so much as I am geared for speed...

Hi,
I'm going to be organising an alley cat now that we have a bit more light in the evenings. Not sure what date yet but will keep people updated (probably a weekday eve)
I was thinking maybe charging £5 entry fee with 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prize purse (obviously the more people enter the bigger the cash prizes)
If you have organised one of these before then I'd love to hear what aspects worked for you & what stuff you would do differently next time. I'll be organising it mainly through this thread and also the Brighton FGSS page on Facebook .
I'm hoping that people will either use a fixed gear or single speed to take part but if you only have geared bikes you won't be turned away.

Great news!
But.. I recently sold my fixie, although as the thread suggests, I've wanted to take part in some form of alley cat in Brighton for a while. I've only got my geared Cannondale now, would definitely want to still ride...

Furthermore, if I (quite miraculously) place highly, I will of course withdraw my right to any winnings etc.
-
• #22
You could just leave your bike in the same gear throughout the alleycat.
I've got some great check points lined up already....I just hope they all haven't been used in previous alley cats. -

I might be up for this.

The alleycat checkpoints will be finalised tonight & I'll be trying it out tomorrow morning to gauge times & see if it's as doable as I imagine it to be. I'll be announcing the date by Friday 25th April.
What with VeloCafe now in place as a perfect hub for cyclists, there must surely be enough of us floating around to do an alleycat?
I'm not on Facebook so either I'm missing stuff on there or there's no racing in Brighton.
I wouldn't have the foggiest how to organise such an event, mind you
