No rear brake?
-
• #3
Nope ... Probably a strange fashion but most riders I know only run a front brake on an SS bike

The paint job around the head tube badge doesn't look that pro...

Photo doesn't do the paint much justice .... It was painted by GT Paintworks in Sway, New Forest

1 brake ss = against the law and stupid as hell. Fashion over safety/common sense...
Price is mega-lolz, would expect an old conversion like that to be more like £180-250max.
I've bought complete period track bikes with all original parts in better condition for much less than your asking price..Perhaps ebay would be a better bet than on here with the price you think it's worth?

Also, shouldn't it have 27" wheels? Could drive a boat through those clearances.
Some nice period mudguard would help hide the bodge! -

Thankyou for the comments, just remembered why I don't use forums anymore .... people slagging off your hard work!
Single brake is NOT illegal, yes it would originally come with 27" wheels but it isn't a restored vintage bike it is a custom single speed .... therefore it is not "bodged"
This lug work is rare .... The bike is priced high due to the rare frame and decent parts that are on the bike.
Please instead of slagging things off keep your opinions to yourself!

Sum of parts/paint does not equal what it will retail for: if you're refurbing to sell on, then you need to be paying trade prices.
£150 with a fair wind on Ebay; and one Weinmann single pivot is stupid as well as illegal.

It's not slagging off, it's an honest opinion with information that would help a potential buyer make a decision.
As a general rule, if you ride a normal bike, you have to have two *independent *braking systems: one “which operates on the front wheel”, and one which operates on the back. (PCCUR r. 7(1)(b)(ii))
So no, you're wrong. 1 brake is allowed on a fixed gear bike of courseBy law, fixed-wheel bikes (i.e. bikes where “one or more of the wheels is incapable of rotating independently of the pedals”) have to have a front brake. (PCCUR r. 7(1)(b)(i))
I won't keep my opinions to myself when people are trying to fleece buyers. That's the great thing about forums, they protect everyone involved! And I think 99.9% of people on here would consider 700c in a 27" a bodge, especially when wheels and tyres are readily available and cheap as cheaps. 'custom' doesn't have to be shoddy...
If you ride your bike on a road and it doesn’t have the necessary brakes, or it does have the brakes but they’re not in efficient working order, you’ll commit an offence. It doesn’t matter whether you *know *about the problem with your brakes – you’ll be guilty just by riding on the road. (PCCUR rr. 6, 10; RTOA s. 91; James v Smee [1955] 1 QB 78, 90).
It’s also an offence to “cause or permit” someone to ride a bike on the road when it doesn’t have the necessary brakes, or the brakes aren’t in good order. So if you lend your bike to someone else, and they are caught riding it on the road without proper brakes, you could commit this offence – or (possibly) if you permit your child to ride their bike on the road without proper brakes. But if you’re not the person doing the riding, you will probably only commit this offence if you *knew *about the problem with the brakes (or “shut your eyes to the obvious”). (James v Smee, above, 91)Also inconsiderate selling a bike to an unsuspecting buyer that's unsafe and could leave them open to a fine.

Just wanted to add .... I did not know that one gear on an SS was illegal, they say that every day is a school day and today is no different!
Trying to work out how I end this thread or delete it but can't work it out .... Any advice please?!

Thread tools, top right, close thread...
1950's Carlton Catalina Single Speed Road Bike
I bought this frame in awefull condition with a stuck seatpost but having done some research realised that it was something special .... So decided to restore it.
The frame number "E8653" indicates that the bike was built between 1955 and 1958 which makes it pre Raleigh takeover in 1960 and means it was built in their Worksop factory in England.
The frame is made from Reynolds 531 and has spearpoint lining with "Raccords Super Champion Egg Lugs" .... I have had the stuck seatpost removed and the frame professionally painted Caterham Green (British Racing basically) .... Professional paint job not powdercoat.
Frame is 22" from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube.
The bike has been re-built to a single speed specification and is not a fixie.
The wheels have classic Shimano 105 hubs with Mavic Open Pro rims, they are both bolted and have new inner tubes and new Specialized tyres .... Both are 700c
There is a Brooks B17 saddle sat on top of a new seatpost, the seat clamp bolt is also new.
A new headset is attached to a vintage Pivo stem with nice chrome bars.
The brake is Weinmann with new cable and brake blocks.
The chainset is Ofmega and is gorgeous, it is like a vintage replica of the Campagnolo Record .... Really suits the frame well.
The bottom bracket, chain, metal pedals and single speed kit are all new.
The bars have been wrapped in new bar tape.
This is an absolute stunning, classic bike that is a real headturner .... The lugs are a work of art and the photographs really don't do it justice.
Would look awesome ripping up the streets of London or any other city.
Due to the quality of this bike I AM NOT prepared to post and therefore UK buyers only please .... I live just outside Southampton, I can happily meat part way or meet at the train station if you are comming from London etc.
Please no silly offers, the paint job and new parts cost alot (paint job alone was close to £100 and the RRP of the seat is £70 .... to say nothing of all the other new parts!!).
Cash on collection prefered.
Any questions .... Pleased ask
