I'm hoping the grey Archetypes will do for a fair while, particularly if they're good weather wheels used with soft pads, but they'll still go eventually.
carbon pads might help, but its still not going to last that long
No. The Exalith coating on some Mavic rims is probably best bet

mine wore out in the rear between october and february. But that was 200 lane miles a week

Worn out rims look very prommuter.
-
• #82380
dissappointing it does not have disc brakes. All that effort
Not really. It's a fun bike, not a race machine. No real need for them - they can be a faff and they do limit your wheel choices.

Are there any alloy rims with coloured braking surfaces that hold their colour?
Mavic 40's, best of both worlds
-
• #82382
Strange that folk on here worry about keeping gumwalls clean whilst also worrying about grey braking surfaces turning silver.
Ride your bike enough and the whole lot goes dark grey anyway. Looks fine. -

a novel opinion and outlook there.

Mavic Open Pro CD wiill stay dark grey.
-
• #82385
No it won't. Open pro ceramic will though, as will the Rigida carbide coated rims.

Yeah, I mean Ceramic, not CD.

From the SSCX thread.
Think this would be much better without the white stripes, and if the lettering was black.
Also hed rims and white cranks seem a bit try hard, I would prefer something more "normal" .
-
• #82388
It's the modern way.
-
• #82389
I actually rather like the Hed rims on that. I'm usually not keen on black rims with silver braking surfaces, but I think they work here - probably because the tan side walls disguise them a little and the wheels are a bit dirty overall.
-
• #82390
^^^theyre good wheels, what is wrong with them? People in the US build with HED rims like people here build with Archetypes/open pros/other fashionable alloy rims because they're fairly cheap and so readily available.

Bike Porn doesn't care about "normal" or your poor alternative colourway >>>>>>

Aren't HED Belgiums just the American name for Ardennes?
If so, I don't think they're cheap rims...
-
• #82393
yep - same rims
-
• #82394
Oh yes, they are a bit more expensive than I thought. I should probably know considering I own some...
Either way, they build into great wheels, hence why the bike on the last page has them...
Morgan Belgiums are $130 rather than £110 odd quid for the Ardenne.

Really want the new Ardennes Plus SL;
I'd be all over it if they come out in 650B.
-
• #82396
They're about 300g per rim lighter than the (same dimension) rims I'm using with 25s.

Gosh I can't wait until I stop growing so I can get something custom, comfy and sensible.
