I've tried Cinelli gel pads, but without much success; they're difficult to wrap nicely and difficult to position effectively.
An old inner tube does make an appreciable difference to the grip size, but less so if vibration is a problem.
Talc on the inside of the tube will make them easier to slip on and two sections allowing a gap for the lever clamps is easier than trying to get the clamps over one continuous piece.
Choosing the right size tube helps to get a snug fit, which will prevent them from slipping.
Of course your existing tape may not now be long enough, but it sounds like you could do with something thicker anyway: a shame as I think it looks really good.
