The grooves are for rubber O-rings to help fit, although... "As it turns out, the outside diameter of the O rings needs to be nearly exactly the same as the inside diameter of the bars. The deflection of the O rings is almost negligible so it needs to be very close. Which will make it nearly impossible to make these a generic fit for many brands of handlebars. Unless I have an exact measurement of the bar diameter."
Having vinyl bar tape stuffed inside the bar end should also help. I'll let you know how I get on. ;-)
