Seems unlikely, what is more likely is that neither pilot had any experience in formation flying which is extremely fucking difficult, so one pilot just flew his plane into the other plane.
Standard practice is to break formation the moment you lose sight of the other aircraft. I don't think either pilot followed this practice.
