The 'Fanelli' reincarnated

  • I recently picked up the well known bright yellow track frameset+stem with cinelli stickers from uoeno (who got it from chokalateboywonder who got it from jantrit who got it from sukidayo2).

The idea for my first fixie build was a budget winter commuter to begin with, and then to upgrade beater parts when the nicer weather comes back around.
I didn't want to be spending more than £200 all together really, so as soon as I bought the frameset (which was kindly picked up and held for by HPx93 until I was back in the country) I got to work hunting down the forums for everything else I needed.

By the time my frame was posted to me I had already bought:

    • BLB bullhorn bars
    • Turbo leather saddle
    • Cheap Dawes crankset
    • Condor > Mavic MA3 rear fixed wheel
    • BLB track front hub
    • Straps for BMX pedals

And then since I've had the frame with me I've bought some cheap and cheerful 28C Vittoria's for the winter rides as well as some new tape for the bars.
HPx93 was nice enough to send me an old front brake he had along with the frame when he posted it to me, and I already have an old Dirty Harry lever and a random cable lying around so that's the stopping sorted.

So this is how it's currently looking sat in my conservatory:

I want it to look as clean as possible so I've been busy painting a few silver bits to join the rest of the black parts which I've been collecting up.

At the moment I'm just waiting for a seatpost from someone here and a big chainreaction order full of everything else I need to complete the build. With any luck it will be here today so I'll try to post some pictures when it does and then I'll be busy tomorrow building it all up!

  • Nice fondue set

Thanks man, plenty more where that came from in my conservatory.

  • Sick one. Can't wait to get out on rides

Me too, gonna be a lot of fun!

  • Last of the parts came today, including a mavic open pro rim which I just finished building onto the front BLB track hub:

  • Bit more progress today, wheels and seat are on, bars are taped and the brake is just waiting for a cable.

Had some problems with the cranks, the chain wheel rubs on the frame. And then to make things worse I stripped the thread on the inside of the crank arm when I was trying to pull it off. Got it off now but the thread is ruined, looks like I'll be getting some new cranks earlier than I thought...

Anyway here's how it's looking at the moment:

  • Looking sick bro, Shame about the cranks! Group rides in a week or so when you move!

  • Nice looking bike mate.

  • Thanks! currently on the hunt for a crankset so I can finally get it on the road

  • Small update, new cranks arrived yesterday. Some Sturmey Archer's from ebay:

Gonna have another go at finishing the build sometime today.

  • Wehhh, nice one Ellis. Good to see Layla (Yes, I named the frame) with some black components on it once again. Let me know how well it rides once you're finished.

Thanks man! Haha, Layla... I'm not sure ill be keeping that name! And yeah I'll let you know, can't wait to ride it

  • cranks are lookin smooth lad, how much did they set you back?

£40 off the bay! Thought that wasn't bad for new and boxed

  • As it currently stands:

Took it out for a little test ride on the road today and it feels good to have it almost finished. Only the front brake cable which needs taking to a bike shop to be done since I don't have the tools at home.

For mostly second hand parts, it runs pretty smoothly. The back wheel has a bit of play, I had a quick go at trying to tighten the cones but nothing really changed so I'll probably just put up with it and buy a new back wheel in spring or take it to a bike shop if it gets really bad.

  • That looks great. Apologies if I have missed what tools you need in this thread to sort your brakes. Assuming it is a cable cutter and crimper I bought these as two separate and expensive items and they are nice but the one I use all the time cost me less than £20 at Halfords and it cuts and crimps - perhaps I should put the first two on fleabay.

Thanks! Yeah I didn't mention what tools I needed for
The brake but you're right, I need a decent cable cutter and a crimper, but for now I'm just going to get the brake set up at an LBS and think about getting my own tools for it if I ever think I need them again

  • Layla has never looked so good. :') Good to see she is in good hands.

  • looking at it now though ellis your seat needs to go back a touch!
