  • Another plus for C41 BW, You can use Digi ICE when scanning. If you want.

  • Kodak Tech Pan, expired 1998, Rolleiflex. No post-processing involved apart from scanning. Shameless plug: if you're up in Edinburgh between 13th December and January 17th, come see an exhibition of the rest. Details below.

  • I'll be around - will check it out.

  • Try Kodak's Tri-X 400 for example, a classic b&w film.

As far as I know, real Tri-X doesn't exist anymore, the replacement 400TX isn't made the same way. Can't push the film as hard and retain detail despite grain. I've got two rolls of Tr-X that are way out of date and have permanent life in the fridge! Too scared to use them.

In other news. AG-photo are pretty slow turning film around. Not a complaint, merely an observation.

Correct; still a good film that suits what HPx39 is looking for I thought.

  • thanks, im aware of the basic difference (c41 and the other processes) being that c41 is more readily available, but i dont mind having a long turn around on film (i have like 8 rolls in my fridge from june/july) and i do shoot a lot of film so im comfortable with it if its not particularly that forgiving.

thanks ill possibly try some Tri-X then!
do you guys buy film from anywhere in particular? ive bought a lot from 7dayshop in the past due to the fact that the camera shops back home sucked, but i would like a nice friendly shop to frequent in London if you guys have had any good experiences!

  • Ebay, mailshots and discount films direct are always worth a look. Between them, it's hard to find anywhere cheaper.

  • best film-buying scenario in london is when Silverprint have short-dated stock when you just happen to be there :)
a couple of years ago I got a couple of boxes of Fuji Reala - 20 rolls per box for £20 each. happy times.

  • WOW, thats a bargain, infact thats the same price i pay for the film ive been shooting from poundland (Agfa Vista 200) which isn't half bad to be honest!

    • works out around £2.25 per 24exp. roll by way of comparison, plus the initial / one-off cost of a bulk loader and reusable canisters.
You would almost certainly need to develop your own if you go down this route - I'd be surprised if a shop or commercial lab would touch anything hand loaded and lacking DX coding.
  • Pentax MX <3

  • +1 !

Did you find one in a shop? How much did you pay for it?

  • Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7, CT Precisa crossed, scanned

  • Why on earth do you xpro?

  • Why don't you?

  • Because it seems like a waste of film with not very nice results.

  • That's, like, your *opinion, man..

    But seriously -
*I do like the 'results', the 'look' so to say.
I like the colours. I like the things the chemistry does sometimes.

Yes, sometimes pictures turn out shit, and you maybe wish you had the film developed regularly.
It's a bit of a gamble / an experiment you can foresee the results of to a degree.
I really like the way the picture above turned out, and I'm pretty sure I would never have done this in PS like that.

tldr: some like it, some don't?

Fair enough. The points highlighted are too scary for me!

  • Just try it once!

It's not like heroin, or falling in love or something.

Jesus....you don't fuck about do you!

    Shame, my two favourite things.

  • Recommendations for a rangefinder? Would like a fast-ish 35mm lens, manual or aperture priority, small as possible.

Was thinking of Olmpus 35SP or XA (though didn't get on with the xa2).

  • Leica M3 with 35mm Cron on Ilford FP4 in Sao Paolo the other week.

Leica II (1933) with Elmar shot on Ilford FP4 in London the other month.

    Hehe.

Well, if you do want to give it a try some time, have this advice for happy crossing:

    • you don't need expensive slide film, but fresh chemicals in developement are a good thing.
    • use a contrasty camera / lens. stop down. "bokeh" does not really work with xpro, it' really more about the sharp things.
    • the more sun the better. artificial light is usually worthless. i shot one under bulbs the other day that turned out alright, but it's an exception

    What's your budget?

Why you think you didn't get on with the XA2?
I just shot my XA again the other day, and really liked that thing, but
if you have glasses it's pretty hard to see the framelines in the finder,
and it really is hard to focus the thing for me (depending on light and subject).
So this means - for me - it's pretty much for "slow" shots only.
