Best pubs? What say you, hivemind?

  • Burp.

  • I heard of this place recently. I've never been, but it looks pretty awesome!

  • best pubs?
The Hansom Cab for a £1.60 pint of bitter and to be surrounded by 40 year old Yorkshire men.
Evil Eye lounge, not a pub as such, but they have some really good bottled beer and do good food. There's also massive beds upstairs.
The Black Swan, really nice inside, decent ales. They have a virtual tour too http://www.blackswanyork.com/vtour
The Hole in the Wall, really good pub lunch
The Kings Head, old and historic, on the river front and always gets flooded. Worth a trip too to see the mark on the wall from the highest flood.

There's loads I can't be bothered to type out, to be honest there's hundreds of pubs and they're all good.

    Hell yeah!

  • Thanks Sumo

  • Yeah, what sumo said, pretty much a decent pub on every street. Roman Bath is built on top of one and you can go down and see it, Pivo has good European lagers and they do steins, Lendal Cellar is a big brick arched place, and loads of traditional English pubs with real ales I can remember the location of but not the name. Try the York Brewery ales, they are made inside the city walls

  • Pivni, sister of York Tap, sister of Euston Tap, where I've just come from. #win

  • I used to study and then work in York; in my experience it's the best place to live in the world (and I say that currently living in New Zealand).

I can only echo what other people have said. Lendal Cellars and the Hansom Cab are not to be missed, although ultimately the York Brewery pubs do serve better beer.

If you like fish and chips, try Drakes on Low Petergate.

The Charles in Heslington was my local for several years and I have fond memories of it, although I've heard rumours that it has been turned into a wine bar...

  • I grew up in York - in fact I'm here now at my parents.

I'd echo the above although nowadays I'd probably give Lendal Cellars a miss although it is an interesting building.

A good pub crawl (All these places do a good pint and are proper pubs) into town from that postcode would be:

    Fawcett Street

    • The Edinburgh Arms
    • The Seahorse

Through the bar walls to George Street

    • The Phoenix

    Head to Walmgate

    • Red Lion

    Head up to Fossgate

    • The Blue Bell (tiny pub - literally just a bar)

Top of Fossgate turn left onto Pavement

    • Golden Fleece

You're now in the city centre so see the places mentioned in other posts.

To be honest you can't really go wrong in York - there's pubs everywhere and the city is small. Be warned though - from mid afternoon on a Saturday the city centre is overrun by stag and hen do's.

    Enjoy tha' sen.

  • 22nd July 2014 - will be in York for the afternoon. Any cafes/pubs likely to be showing the cycling?

  • thanks Sumo - I'll drop them a line

  • Thanks Sumo:

  • Awesome, I'm moving back to York imminently and didn't even know that place existed, thanks

  • Biggest mistake I ever made was leaving York in 1999... (after leaving Somerset in 1992...)
