quill ahead converter

Apart from planning to put on a modern sram red group on my 80's masi prestige i am adding to the heresy by planning to stick on a modern stem and bar setup. I still want to use the steel fork so have been looking at pros and cons of using a ahead converter. Advice seems to vary on the web as to whether to go with a carbon fork or using an existing fork with the converter. Whats the general view around these parts?

Quill->Ahead converters can work well, but use only with steel/aluminum forks
and make sure the fit is very precise (to a tenth of a mm) else you will end up with wobbliness and also risk damaging your fork/steerer/headset
