can this be converted to fixed?
-
• #3
Not if it's a Campagnolo hub.
-
• #4
you have PM
-
• #5
not very easily, you need different hub
-
• #6
Actually the cometes, according to my knowledge, don't have interchangeable hubs and you can make them fixed with adapter and a track axle. Some one with some proper knowledge might disagree. But if you can find the axle it should be doable.
-
• #7
Yes, adapters exist . Custom track axle is not a problem as well...

Make your mind up

I wasn't quite sure if whole hub/axle kit I'm not expert on this
-
• #10
I can confirm that these wheels with the screw on block can be used as a fixed wheel by changing the axle and using an adaptor to space out the sprocket to the correct chain line.
I have the parts here if any one buys the wheels and wants to give it a try .

If it's 8 speed, then it'll be a cassette and not a freewheel.
-
• #12
What kind of brake pads were used with these wheels back when they were new tech? would the modern cork ones (for carbon brake surfaces) work?

I've got a Mavic disc, I've also got an 8 speed freewheel ( screw on ) They do exsist although it's not a good fit, a 7 or 6 is better.

Is it Campag?
-
• #15
Can't remrmber, must have a look as it's been sitting in the shed for a while, but I don't think it is. Hummmmm
-
• #16
What's that cassette or freewheel? treeman? I dunno myself now
-
• #17
So, looking at this........ didn't campag bring out a sort of casette way back then in the "old days" I sort of remember trying one out but never got on with it. Not sure if they took off all that well. Looking at this one there does not seem to be any where to put a removal tool so would that rule out a free wheel although my mavic disc takes a screw on block. If the first cog is threaded on the inside then there would have been a small locking ring fitted as well as the last cog screwing on by itself. I remember the locking ring used to split. If Vic can get a couple of chain whips and see if the first cog comes off then we will be all the wiser. Any other views ?

Doesn't look like a cassette: no lockring.
I am a wiser, and slightly disappointed, man: a Comete with an 8 speed Campag freehub would be a rare beast.

Rare indeed, I will have a look tonight and let you know. Another point of interest, on this disc the word comette is below the MAVIC name where as on mine the comette word is to the right of the MAVIC name, were there two versions ? I have noticed that on the 1986 tour de france dvd the comette was to the right. Anorak, I know.

Erm.. Brainless of Suffolk, have you ever had your hands on a C Record catalogue? Thought not. Eight speed compatible threaded Campagnolo hubs have been around since '83. If you dont know what your talking about - keep schtum.

I've got a Comete from 84 on my turbo trainer bike, and a light alloy Challenger (heavy as f~ck) sitting in my garage. Both eight speed compat screw on. At the time they were truly sensational things, rumbling along the road in local tens and 25's. I managed to pull out a low 58' with my first attempt on a Comete, a whole 80 seconds faster than I ever went before. Could've been placebo effect though ;)

Thanks for that (even if we'd already got there without you)!
You can get back to wanking-off to Countdown now (she's no Carole Vordeman, but "phwoar").
-

Been rooting around in the shed, no Carole Vorderman but I did find that freewheel ( screw on block ). It is 8 speed but not a campag. It's bog standard sachs, I remembered I bought it NOS but never used it in the end.
Mr. Febrile, you've got a challenger lying around your manor gathering dust I expect. How's about letting an old school tester like myself having a bit of long term borrowing of even buying of said object ? -

Scilly - you are by far and away the most prolific wanker on LFGSS. So many posts, and so little of any real knowledge or accurate content to contribute. Your fabulous ignorance about all things cycling - 'Ah you see I know all about this...''
Only you dont. You dont know fuck all, you dont.
Its the only thing I read your occassional daft rant threads for. Keep up the dimwitted good work.
Toodle Pip.
Countdown in the afternoon? Do you have gainful employment Sir?
I thought not...
