Removing anodizing without removing laser etching

  • Hi

So I know there are numerous guides to removing anodizing and polishing aluminium components . I've used Jols guide before to polish up a pair of beaten cranks .

What I can't find info on is whether using a product such as oven pride to remove the anodizing will also remove laser etching? I have a pair of very scratched and beaten campag cranks but the logos are in perfect condition. Can I remove the anodozing without affecting the logos, then polish them while masking over the etching? Most of the examples I see of highly polished cranks do not have logos anymore

    Cheers

  • I couldn't say for sure, but I doubt it.

Having the logo engraved is your best bet.

I got a pair from Tel on here and I think he still offers the service.

You can leave the engraving "raw", or fill with colour: red looks boss and easy enough to change too.

  • Thanks I guess I'll just have to try it and see . The engraving does look nice , I'll keep it in mind

  • Yes oven cleaner will destroy the laser etching. The only way to keep the original etching is to polish round it which looks crap....

  • Looks like it's all or nothing then. The cranks are really beaten up so wouldn't be a tragedy if I did decide to polish. I guy I know with a laser engraver says he can re do the logos so might try this as a experiment after polishing am see how it looks. Will post results if I do

  • I'm not an expert on laser etching but I did have a set done once after I polished them; it didn't come out great (poor quality equipment?) but worse still it polished off with very little effort. I think if you have it re-laser etched you'll need to have them re-anodised too....

  • Hmmm, I'll speak to the guy about durability. What kind of place did you have them done?Perhaps I should just engrave them like Scilly suggested...or maybe just leave them alone!
