I think if I were going down the skinned-over spoked wheel route, I'd be inclined to get a 23mm rim (e.g. Rigida Grizzly on an On-One Novatec hub or a ready built Halo Aerowarrior) for all the usual reasons, and probably no heavier than the Ellipse.
