A nine-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being thrown into the air in a hit-and-run collision.

Radwan Uddin suffered severe head injuries when a speeding car ploughed into the mountain bike he and brother Mufhuj were riding in East Ham.

They pair were in Woodhouse Grove at the entrance of Plashet Park, near their home, when the silver Mazda hit them at about 7.50pm yesterday. Mufhuj, 12, sustained minor injuries. After the car hit a parked vehicle, forcing it 60 yards down the road, its occupants fled, chased by local people.

One resident said: “The park was full. When we heard the bang we all ran over. There must have been 100 people. The boys had been sharing a bike, the older one pedalling and the other holding the handlebars.

“The one in the seat was thrown into the air. He was unresponsive and his breathing was shallow. An off-duty nurse did what she could while we waited for the ambulance. His brother got up and was in a daze, in total shock. Then his parents came, the mother thought he was dead. They were crying and beating their heads, screaming.

“When the car hit the speed bump it flew. The driver, an Asian lad in his twenties, and the passenger got out and ran but the driver came back to see what was going on. People chased him but he managed to get away.”

An older brother of Radwan said his parents spent all night at the hospital: “Radwan is only breathing with a machine. He is just a typical little boy with lots of energy. We just can’t believe this has happened.” Police are appealing for information.

DI mark cam of the Chadwell Heath Road Death Investigation unit said: "the driver left a nine-year-old boy lying in the road fighting for his life. I would hope the conscience of the driver leads him to come forward and hand himself into police. I would also urge anyone who knows the driver of the witnessed the collision to call the police immediately."

  • That's absolutely terrible.
Best wishes for the family and a full recovery for the boys.

  • Don't usually contribute to these things, but FFS - what's wrong with some people?

    Thoughts with the family... :-(

  • Thoughts with everyone who had to see something like this happen and the family. Big love to the lad who's struggling in hospital, get well soon little chap.

Nothing but disappointment that some humans can do something like that to someone and fail to take responsibility for it.

  • Dreadful news. RIP

My sincere condolences to the riders family and friends.

  • This is very sad. I've worked in quite a few schools around there which really brings it home. Thoughts go out to those families.

  • outrageous.

    some small consollation:

Earlier today a 21-year-old-man attended at an east London police station. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, and grievous bodily harm. He was later bailed to return in early August pending further enquiries.

  • What a horrible waste of a young life. Simply unbelievable.

  • So sad, It is unbelivable what some people do with their lives.

I was in a hit and run with my two kids last year, though luckily we were in the car at the time and there was no major injuries. But to know that person saw what they had done and sped off makes my blood boil.
Strength and thoughts to the family.

  • Poor little man, RIP.

  • Truly awful.. My thoughts are with his parents family and friends.

  • This is just so awful. RIP.

  • thoughts and prayers for radwan, his family and friends.

  • The write-up in the Standard almost makes it seem as if the driver was forced to run (or was panicked into running) by the reaction of witnesses, in contrast to the passenger who just ran. In a way, I'd like that to be true. I'm not surprised by the behaviour of mobs, but I'd like to think that maybe the driver cared, but was scared off. It must be true sometimes.

  • If he cared he'd seek sanctuary and ultimately turn himself in.

  • He has turned himself in;

Earlier today a 21-year-old-man attended at an east London police station. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, and grievous bodily harm. He was later bailed to return in early August pending further enquiries.
