The Mayor of London will be asked tomorrow if police could waive fines awarded to cyclists for riding without lights - provided they buy a set within seven days.

As it stands, cyclists in London risk a £50 fine if they are caught after dark without a white front light and a red back light, but during a trial in Cambridge, 85 per cent of riders chose to avoid the charge by making themselves more visible.

Tory assembly member Andrew Boff will ask Boris Johnson during Mayor’s Question Time (MQT) tomorrow whether a similar trial might work in London, following a spate of deaths on the capital’s streets that have lumped pressure on Mr Johnson to do more to improve safety.
Mr Boff, who is a cyclist himself, said the measure should be considered alongside a raft of others aimed to saving the lives of cyclists, adding: “What this is designed to do is to get people thinking about the own safety…
“There have been times when I was not as visible as I could have been.
“I think it’s something that people in London will appreciate.”
He said cyclists should be “reminded” to look after themselves.
“It’s about improving the general level of safety of cyclists. Cyclists, I do think, need to from time to time be reminded to take certain steps to ensure they’re visible.”
Mr Boff said he hoped the Mayor would welcome his “very un-bureaucratic” measure during MQT, which begins at 10am tomorrow morning.
